Built on Real Experience, Not Quick Fixes

We started syfarionexo in 2019 after watching too many people struggle with financial advice that sounded great but didn't actually fit their lives. Our approach is different because it has to be.

Why We Focus on Seasons

Most financial planning treats every month the same. But if you've ever tried to stick to a budget during the holidays or managed expenses during school holidays, you know that's not how life works.

After years of working with families and small business owners across Australia, we noticed something. The same people who felt stressed about money in December were often doing fine in March. Not because they earned less, but because their expenses came in waves they hadn't planned for.

So we stopped pretending finances work on a flat timeline. Instead, we help people map their money around the natural rhythms of their year – when bills spike, when income dips, when unexpected costs show up like clockwork.

What Guides Our Work

1

Practical Over Perfect

We'd rather give you a system you'll actually use than a complex spreadsheet that sits in your downloads folder. Simple tools that work beat sophisticated plans that don't.

2

Patterns, Not Predictions

We can't tell you what the market will do next year. But we can help you spot your own spending patterns and build buffers where you need them most. That's more useful anyway.

3

Adaptation Built In

Life changes. Your financial approach should change with it. We build flexibility into everything we do because rigid plans break the moment something unexpected happens.

How We Actually Work

  • We start by mapping your year with you. Not a generic calendar – your actual year with its specific pressures and patterns.
  • Then we look at where money gets tight and why. Often it's not about earning more, it's about timing mismatches between income and expenses.
  • We build buffer strategies for those predictable pressure points. Christmas isn't a surprise. School costs aren't a surprise. So we treat them like the regular expenses they are.
  • You get tools that fit how you already manage money. If you're a spreadsheet person, great. If you're definitely not, that's fine too.
  • We check in when it makes sense for your situation – usually at the start of each season or when major changes happen.

Who's Behind This

Thijs Vermeulen, Financial Planning Director

Thijs Vermeulen

Financial Planning Director

Thijs spent twelve years in corporate finance before realizing that most planning advice was built for people who don't exist. He started syfarionexo to create something more grounded. Outside work, he's usually fixing up his 1970s house in Ainslie or trying to keep his vegetable garden alive through Canberra's unpredictable weather.

Callum Ashworth, Client Strategy Lead

Callum Ashworth

Client Strategy Lead

Callum joined us in 2021 after working in small business accounting. He's the one who figured out how to make seasonal planning work for people with irregular income – freelancers, contractors, and business owners who never know exactly what next month looks like. He's also our resident coffee snob, which everyone tolerates because he brings good beans.

What You Can Expect

Honest Conversations

We're not going to pretend we have all the answers or that there's a magic formula. What we will do is listen to what's actually happening in your financial life and work from there. Sometimes that means telling you things are fine when you thought they weren't. Sometimes it means pointing out problems you hadn't noticed yet.

No Jargon Defence

If we use a term you don't know, call us out. The financial industry loves complicated language, but there's almost always a simpler way to say things. We try to catch ourselves, but we grew up in this world and sometimes forget what's obvious to us isn't obvious to everyone.

Support That Matches Your Needs

Some people want regular check-ins. Others prefer to reach out when something changes. Both approaches work fine. We're not here to create dependency – we're here to give you tools and backup when you need it. Our job is to make ourselves less necessary over time, not more.

Ready to Try a Different Approach?

We run seasonal planning workshops starting in September 2025, with one-on-one consultations available from August onwards. These aren't sales pitches – they're actual working sessions where we help you map your financial year and build strategies that fit your life.

If you're tired of financial advice that sounds good but doesn't actually help, or if you've noticed your money stress follows a predictable pattern through the year, this might be worth exploring.
